The stars are brighter above Austin than almost anywhere else. There are multiple locations easily accessible to experience the views of the night sky. From historic landmarks and scenic parks to community centers and nature preserves, you can always find a spot that's perfect for stargazing.

The University of Texas at Austin – Department of Astronomy

The University of Texas at Austin's Department of Astronomy offers a unique opportunity for students and the public to explore the wonders of the night sky. With its renowned faculty, state-of-the-art facilities, and commitment to public outreach, the department hosts various programs and events throughout the year, providing glimpses into the vast and mysterious universe.

UT Austin Astronomy Department hosts free public stargazing events every Wednesday night on the PMA roof. The events are open to all ages, but young children should be supervised by adults. Viewing times change throughout the year, so check the schedule beforehand. Groups of 15 or fewer can come without reservations, but larger groups need to contact Lara Eakins two weeks in advance. Private events are not available.

Although they occur less frequently than those hosted by other organizations, the ACC Star Parties offer an incredible opportunity to explore the wonders of the night sky, completely free of charge! During these star parties, experienced astronomers guide participants through the night sky, pointing out constellations, planets, and other captivating celestial objects. These events typically occur 3-4 times a year, so check the astronomy department's website or social media pages for upcoming dates and times.

Inks Lake State Park
